About the book

"As early as 1968, Fredrikson participated in the Foundation's events and exhibitions. He formed a close friendship with Aimé Maeght and produced a substantial body of work in the printmaking studios, extending his exploration of the imprint. At the same time, he increased his collaborations with his poet friends. For Fredrikson, engraving and publishing broke free from purely reproductive illustration to become creative tools in their own right, notably through interventions that were sometimes ultra-thin, sometimes incisive. These actions interacted with the front and back of the pages or sheets of paper, a reversible dimension also found in the reflective properties of his stainless steel reliefs. Folded, striated, incised, perforated, hammered, these large metal sheets function as bas-reliefs bearing the artist's markings, composed of lines and dots in space.
At the crossroads of painting, sculpture and installation, these pieces delineate a constantly evolving universe. They interact with the surrounding space (reflection, air, light, the viewer's movement, sound) to create a space between the real and the virtual where the viewer, placed at the center of the arrangement, is completely enveloped by the artwork.
In 1972, Fredrikson presented the fruits of this work during a solo exhibition, Espaces Virtuels, at the Foundation, honoring his career and confirming the coherence of these diverse lines of research."
